Wrestling Gets 2017 Off to a Strong Start

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Taft notched an impressive win over Loomis in our first meet of the new year.  Favorable matchups and some gritty wins led to the large margin.  Liam Fitzgerald hit a first period pin to get the meet off to a roaring start.  After the 145 bout, Co-captain Mike Hennessy added another first period pin.  Then in a tough match, Drew Dye gutted out a smart 5-4 victory at 160.  Then momentum began to build.  Frank Robertshaw, Co-captain Hunter Ramee and Micah Umeh all notched pins in the first four minutes of their matches.  Then we finally had the debut of the our post-grads at 220 and 285.  Combined, it took them a little over a minute to win their matches.  After Jonathan Elkins took a forfeit at 113, Spencer Batten had his first taste of varsity action and pulled off a first period pin.  Winson Gan finished the day with a hard fought 4-2 win.  Taft faces Marvelwood and perennial powerhouse Brunswick on Saturday.

At the JV level, Taft also notched pins by Charles Donaldson, Spencer Batten (wrestling again), Eugene Acevedo, Jack Borzelleri, Evan Ning, JB Andreski, Jamaal Ahmad and a hard fought decision from Liam Fitzgerald.
