Girls' Hockey Tops Pomfret with Strong Start
Wednesday, January 11, 2017
Taft Girls’ Varsity Hockey came out strong against Pomfret this afternoon, dominating the first period of play, and outshooting Pomfret 15-0. The Taft girls were buzzing all around the offensive zone, creating numerous scoring chances, however, the Pomfret goalie was not easily beaten, facing 47 shots in total during the game. About mid way through the first period, Caeley Smith, set up by Sasha Bridger and Claudia Vira, fired a shot over the netminder’s shoulder to take the 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Smith scored her second of the game off passes from Ally Trimper and Vivian Lu.
The second period began with Taft on their heels a bit and Pomfret pressed, taking the momentum for the first five minutes of play. Sidney Molnar had to make a few key stops to keep Pomfret off the board, until Taft regained the upper hand. Sasha Bridger opened the gap off a nifty pass from Lexi Cafiero, and, on her next shift, Cafiero set up Katie Piechnik who fired a top shelf shot to beat the Pomfret goalie and expand the lead to 4-0.
In the third period, Phoebe Autio made her Taft varsity debut in net, coming off the injured reserve list. Early in the third, Autio made a great pad stop on a Pomfret rush, but Taft was remiss in picking up a crashing forward who was able to collect the rebound and beat Autio to get Pomfret on the board. A few minutes later, Pomfret struck again, but the Taft girls remained unified and refused to concede the momentum again. Sarah Ince made a valiant attempt at the net, finishing her rush with a low, hard shot that squeaked through the goalie’s pads for Morgan Trimper to bang home. Rounding out the scoring was Shannon Bucci with a nice shot over the goalie’s glove off a beautiful pass from Vivian Lu, finishing off the 6-2 victory.
Taft is on the road again on Saturday for a 5pm game against Choate.
