Girls' Varsity Hockey vs Westminster School

Score/Result: 4-0 W

Saturday, January 07, 2017

After some heroic driving through the snow, the Peter Pan bus driver delivered the Taft girls to Westminster for a showdown between the Rhinos and the Martlets.  Both teams came out with intensity and play was back and forth throughout the first period.  Shots were 11 for Taft and 7 for Westy but neither team could convert on any attempts.

Momentum seemed to be swaying in favor of the Martlets several minutes into the second period, but Taft's Ally Trimper, assisted by sister, Morgan, was able to slip a backhand shot from her knees through the pads of the Westy goalie to open the scoring.  Buoyed by the go-ahead goal, Taft regained some energy and took back the pace.  Taft goalie, Sidney Molnar, continued to keep Westy at bay on several attempts, while late in the second period, Caeley Smith broke up a Westy pass, which bounced toward Vivian Lu.  Lu snatched up the loose puck and raced toward the offensive end, driving to the corner of the net and banked the puck up and over the Westy goalie to make it 2-0.  Less than a minute later, Liv Santini capitalized on a backhand pass from Shannon Bucci, which bounced off of Santini's skate and ricocheted off a Westy stick into the back of the net to end the period up 3-0.

The third period saw several dangerous scoring opportunities for Westy on some odd-man rushes.  However, Sidney Molnar was determined to keep them off the board, making some clutch saves to preserve the shutout.  In the final minute, Lexi Cafiero rounded out the scoring on a short-handed, empty net goal to finish with a 4-0 victory.

Taft is on the road again Wednesday afternoon at Pomfret.
