Girls' Varsity Basketball vs Deerfield Academy

Score/Result: 47-29 W

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

This game was more “a tale of two halves” than any I can recall coaching. The visiting Rhinos came out flat, and Deerfield’s size and aggression had Taft on its heels (and shooting terribly) the first sixteen minutes. Trailing 23-15 but believing if it could pick up its defensive intensity then good things would happen, the Big Red started the second stanza with a 14-2, defense-leads-to-offense fueled run. And when Deerfield did get open looks, the rim that was so hostile to Taft’s shooters in the first half was no friendlier to the home team.

Juliana Yamin’s consistently stout defense and timely offense (11 points) stood out for the second straight game. Other players did most of their damage late, with Kayla Robinson, who led all scorers, netting 11 of her 16 after the break, and Lauren Pelosi draining all 9 of her points in the second half. Big contributors off the bench at both ends included Jalissa Rodriguez (5 points), Kris Manfreda and Emily Drakeley (2 points each). It was an uplifting win for a team that needed one.
