Girls' Varsity Basketball vs Kingswood-Oxford School

Score/Result: 55-38 W

Girls' Basketball Takes Opener

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

The team launched its season and Founders League play with a road victory against a rugged and talented Kingswood-Oxford squad playing before a raucous home crowd. Both teams had had few practices so offensive play was a little ragged, especially in the first half, which ended with Taft holding a slim four point advantage. But the first several minutes of the second frame proved decisive. The Rhinos surged to a 44-27 lead by the ten minute mark, capped off by a  Kayla Robinson “and the foul” lay-up off a beautiful touch pass from Juliana Yamin. The scoring slowed dramatically after that point as both teams continued to dig in defensively. And while K-O cut into the Big Red’s lead, they never got it to single digits, and the visitors cruised to the win.

Ten Taft players contributed. Lauren Pelosi played nearly the entire game and led all scores with 19 points - but she also distributed five assists and gathered in six rebounds. Robinson accumulated 12 points and twelve boards in fairly limited action, while co-captain Karalyn Baird was Taft’s third double-figures scorer with 12 to go with eight caroms and three assists. Co-captain Sam Manfreda scored 7 game-clinching points down the stretch. Emily Drakeley logged considerable minutes off the bench and scored 4 points to go with six rebounds, while Maggie O’Leary rounded out the scoring with a free throw to accompany a beautiful first-half assist to Pelosi. Yamin, despite not scoring, defended aggressively and played her typical smart-at-both-ends game, while Morgan Sperry, Kris Manfreda and Emilee Adami took the floor confidently and played effectively when called upon.

The Rhinos’ home opener is next Wednesday against perennial power Pomfret.
