Coach Biography: Tyler Whitley

Originally from Torrington, Connecticut, Tyler was captain of the varsity football, basketball, and track & field teams at Taft. He was named All Founders league in each sport, won the New England championship in the javelin, and was selected to the All New England football team. At graduation, Tyler received the Lawrence Hunter Stone Award. After his four years at Taft, Tyler attended Wesleyan University and graduated with a BA in government and a certificate in international relations. He was a four-year letter winner at safety on the varsity football team. As a senior, he was selected to the New England Small College All-Academic team and received the Cardinal Club Scholar Athlete Award. Tyler began his coaching career at the Salisbury School. He worked as a Learning Center tutor and was an assistant varsity football and basketball coach. He was also the head junior varsity football coach. After two years, Tyler left to pursue football coaching in college. While taking classes for an MBA, he spent two years as a graduate assistant football coach at Division I Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.  As an assistant, Tyler led the running backs, managed the scout defense and special teams and recruited student-athletes from around the country. During that time, the team’s offense ranked first in the Northeast Conference in passing for 2010 (11th in the nation) and 2011. He coached a freshman running back in 2011 who won two Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week awards. Tyler took over the Head Football Coach position at Taft in 2012. Tyler works in admissions, coaches varsity football and Varsity boys’ basketball and lives on CPT2, with his wife, Randi Lawlor Whitley ‘04 and his daughter Emma.
