Mentorship Programs

The 2007 United Way of Greater Waterbury Needs Assessment has identified mentorship as a primary need for Waterbury children and youth. The findings of this report are consistent with the national demand for mentors. According to the National Mentoring Partnership "there are currently 18 million children in the United States who want and need a mentor, but only three million have one." To address this issue locally, Taft will use its high school sports teams to mentor and run sports clinics, or character education programs with Waterbury Public School intramural sports teams and partner with the Police Activities League (PAL) to run similar programs; expand our after-school volunteer program by adopting a "high need" Waterbury elementary school to provide mentorship and literacy support; and expand our summer mentorship program in partnership with PAL to provide more opportunities for Taft students to mentor and provide academic enrichment activities for local youth in the summer.
