Art History

Art history is offered at the Advanced Placement level. The emphasis of the course is on Western art , although works outside of the western tradition are included. The goal is to help students become familiar with human creations in the context of the culture, religion, and the historic reference that produced them. We use readings from a primary text as well as supplemental articles and four field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of African Art, The Cloisters, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Museum of Modern Art Manhattan and PS1.

Students create a Power Point presentation and oral report that compares a work of their choice outside of the European tradition with one from the European tradition. Students are asked to research the culture, religion and historical background from which the selected work outside of the European tradition originates.
